Rig 4 mud pump conversion: plunger to 5.5 in. piston, measured on the Slope, expedited and delivered early
Conversion kit and re-machined fluid end modules for a pair of RMP-6-Plex pumps on an Alaska North Slope drilling rig. Field-measured, built in Edmonton, installed with our tech on site.
The job
An Alaska drilling contractor needed to convert the two mud pumps on one of its rigs from plunger to 5.5 in. piston style, and needed it before the rig's next start. No drawings existed for the conversion, and the original pump manufacturer no longer supports it. We're affiliated with that manufacturer and carry its drawings, so the design basis came with us.
We flew to Deadhorse and took the critical measurements on both pumps while the rig crew pulled them down: frame, pony rod runout, recip link box, piston rod, spring retainer, liner cage, spacer and liner. A new fluid end forging couldn't be sourced in time, so the design changed on the fly: expedited design work to convert the rig's existing plunger fluid end modules to piston modules, with the old modules re-machined in Edmonton. Rods, bushings, spacers and seal packages were built alongside them.
The whole job ran on an expedited basis and the kit shipped ahead of the contract date. We helped the rig crew install and commission both pumps, and the rig started on schedule.
